Greg Powell, Managing Partner of Powell Spencer and Partners Solicitors specialises in serious crime, civil liberties and terrorism. Having read Law at the London School of Economics and Psychology at Birkbeck College, Greg trained with WH Thompson and qualified as a Solicitor in 1973. He later became a founding partner at Powell Spencer in 1977.
Greg has successfully represented a diverse range of clients including the family of a Guantanamo Bay detainee, senior political figures in the ‘donorgate’ and ‘cash for honours’ affairs and defendants in many other serious criminal prosecutions.
Greg has an impressive record of clients acquitted of murder (9 out of the last 12). Often approached to represent cases of public interest, Greg has successfully defended the mother who faced a jail sentence as a result of allegedly lying about her address on the school application for her son, a case that raised the interesting issue of ‘other intangible property!’

After a decade of involvement in opposing Price Competitive Tendering and the impoverishment of legal aid funding, Greg continues to be engaged in the campaign against legal aid cuts, recently speaking at a gathering of the South East Circuit and at the Friends’ Meeting House on behalf of the LCCSA and has co-opted to its’ committee.
Greg Powell is rated as one of the leading individuals in Criminal Law in London and regularly appears on radio and television, as a commentator on channels as diverse as Radio 5 Live, the Today Programme, You and Yours on Radio 4, Channel 4 news, Al Jazeera, BBC and ITN news and local radio stations as well as regularly lecturing on criminal law and legal aid.
