Madness in the Criminal Justice System

The family of X call the NHS whilst severally delusional (God is speaking to him) he broke a window.

The NHS called the Police and he is arrested.

He believes God is telling him to be a lion, so he scratches a Policeman.

Kept in custody and taken to the Magistrates’ Court charged with criminal damage and assault. We wait all day for a mental health assessment team. An irritated District Judge at 3pm (did he want to go home?) decides in the absence of assessment he would be remanded in custody until the next day.

Headline – “mentally ill man diverted into the Criminal Justice System and prison” an everyday story in the Criminal Justice System.
