Mark Troman

Head Of Serious Fraud & Business Crime

Mark Troman is a senior member of the crime team responsible for complex case work and higher court advocacy as well as supervising and training solicitors.

Mark is regularly instructed to act for those accused of serious offences, from complex frauds to murder or sophisticated drug dealing enterprises. These cases often concern multiple defendants, can last for many years and lead to thousands of pages of evidence. In doggedly pursuing the prosecution for disclosure and counter-investigating their claims, Mark has considerable knowledge of all forms of modern investigative techniques such as digital forensics, covert surveillance and call data analysis.

Mark regularly defends in prosecutions by non-police agencies such as HM Revenue and Customs, local Trading Standards or food hygiene regulators. He has excellent financial acumen which he brings to bear when defending prosecutions for complex tax fraud or money laundering.

In 2009 Mark set up a dedicated road traffic department at Powell Spencer & Partners and leads the team. He regularly appears at trials and ‘special reasons’ hearings and has saved the driving licences of countless people, either through acquittal or persuasive mitigation. Road traffic law is a technical area with many pitfalls and Mark enjoys the challenges it presents to provide practical legal solutions for his clients. He never forgets the impact a disqualification can have on a defendant and their family and remains focused on finding a way out for his client, when others might accept the seemingly inevitable.

Sitting on the committee of the London Criminal Courts Solicitors’ Association since 2014, Mark has been at the forefront of defending the interests of criminal practitioners and their clients, the accused. The LCCSA is the oldest association dedicated to the interests of criminal law specialists. After one year’s service he was appointed the Honourable Secretary of the Association, a post he held for three years, before becoming the Junior Vice President in 2018. From this position he is well informed of all reforms and changes to a system, within which he seeks to chart a successful course for all his clients.

Client Testimonials

I am so incredibly grateful to have had Mark as my lawyer. The past two years been incredibly difficult for me and my family. Not only did he help with the HMRC case, with charges of cheating the revenue and VAT fraud, he also helped me on an emotional level as well. Mark was able to recover details of my past to build a picture from many years ago that I had long since forgotten! He was also very patient when providing advice on technical and financial aspects of the case.

I am incredibly grateful for his compassion and guidance. Mark gave me my life back and I couldn’t have asked for a better lawyer!

— Mr. L, 3/12/18

Mark was utterly unflappable and calm over the fifteen months of my case – the most difficult time of my life – including at my initial police station interview, which was incredibly reassuring. He dealt very calmly and professionally with an investigating officer who was difficult and obstructive, ensuring at all times that my concerns were addressed and he kept me fully abreast of developments.

Mark was determined and tenacious in pursuing evidence, offering solutions but also at the same time willing to listen to my ideas, and flexibly adapted as the case unfolded over many months. Throughout, Mark maintained a clear strategic mindset that was always focused on achieving the right outcome. I cannot praise his skill and professionalism highly enough.

— Mr. H, 8/6/18

RT @JanetDaby Today I called on the Government to do more to help criminal legal aid solicitors. Despite the warm words from @MoJGovUK many smaller firms are struggling financially and Tory cuts are making this situation worse.
